Aussie ~ Gold Coast & The Islands
Fraser Island, Australia
How about a visit to the largest sand island in the world ?
Located just off the Gold Coast of Aussie , this unique island offers 4-wheeling, swimming, camping, hiking & lots of R&R !
The only way to get around the island is in a 4 wheel drive vehicle – at low tide on the main beach you can get up to 50 MPH, as long as you watch out for hidden sand gullies – with the ocean on one side of you and endless sand dunes on the other…
The trick is being able to drive through the deep, soft sand to get off the beach and into your hotel or campsite. My son borrowed a 4X4 from his boss and we got stuck in the sand the first day! The KEY is: speed is your friend – the faster you go, the less likely you are to get stuck ! Here is a video showing you how to drive on a sand island:
There is a place called the Champagne Pools on the northeast coast of the island. At high tide, the water splashed over the rocks and forms warm shallow pools in the sand – which was perfect for a One-on-One Coaching session with my son Max.
You can hike over the sand blows to Lake MacKenzie – one of the freshwater dune lakes in the middle of the island. When Jess & Max & I hiked up there, it was like crossing an ocean of sand…
There are wild dingoes on the island, so you cannot leave any food lying around – they just look like scrawny little dogs, but they can get very aggressive around food.
Whether it is standing on the cliff at Wadi Point with the waves crashing 30 feet over your head (like I am in this picture), or catching a sunset view from the top of Indian Head or Cathedral Point, it is an amazing place for those looking for a little adventure and a unique experience.
